Kort NieuwsDirk Sterckx, co-voorzitter van de MEP heart group in het Europees Parlement, geeft zijn mening over een gezond hart in "The Parliament Magazine" (April 2010).While the EU ranks very highly in terms of wealth per person compared with the rest of the world, the consequent high quality of life and increase in life expectancy do not necessarily correspond to an increase in health. For one thing, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the number one killer in Europe, with striking disparities between countries not only in terms of incidence, but also – and worryingly – with regard to national prevention policies. With high levels of obesity and unfavourable dietary habits, as well as too high a prevalence of smoking, cardiovascular diseases affect both younger EU citizens and the more fragile elderly population. This greatly impacts Europe’s wellbeing, as member states are called to deal with an unhealthy workforce and rising healthcare costs. In view of this, there is a clear case for the EU to step up action to tackle heart disease and stroke. |
